Part 3 - Work, work, work...
Now quitting for a moment (until the next paragraph) the irony regarding work at the Commission, I will try to give you some idea about what I have been doing professionally in the last months.
I did mention me being in the Information and Communication unit of my DG. DG Interpretation that is. No, it's not the same thing with DG Translation. And no, I'm not an interpreter, nor a translator, nor a linguist. If you insist on having an idea about interpretation, you can find some things here. So, now that we set the most important things, my work has obviously something to do with communicaiton. Once you start with it, you can't get away. Although I can give examples of people who betrayed this noble and sexy cause and redirected themselves towards IT.
Now, you may realise that I use the word sexy a lot. Well, this word is very common in important meetings inside the Commission, especially when you talk about communication. Something like "this message is not really sexy" comes out a lot. So, I've done really sexy things like updating web content, writing an interesting report about blogs as communication tools (which gave me the revelation of doing my own blog), participating in lots of meetings, enjoying press briefings, running from one building to another, babysitting journalists, making tea, drinking tea, and so on.
The second part - committee work, which was not supposed to interfere to much with my DG work, gave me a lot more stress than the first part. I mean, the responsibility of satisfying 600 demanding and confused stagiaires is a burden I could hardly bare. Organising trips, handeling sponsors, organising parties, but even more difficult, supervising other people's work... They told us in the beginning that this experience would be the best crisis management training we'll ever have. Oh, give me a crisis now!
Better though, give me the weekend!!

See, "sexy" is not a word that we use much in meeting. I should try it.
You should try it indeed. It doesn't make that much of a difference on the spot, but makes you consider other things than the boring meeting you're in. Of course, this doesn't happen to functionnaires without a life :-)
